Why does blood flow one way through the heart?

Good question. It is the valves that do it. The tricuspid and bicuspid valves sit between each atrium and ventricle, and the semilunar valves sit at the exits.

Each one opens under pressure from behind it and shuts against pressure from in front, so blood moves forward but cannot come back.

Your turn

A patient’s bicuspid valve does not close fully. Where would blood go during ventricular contraction, and what would that do to the volume reaching the body?

Why it matters

One teacher. Ninety students. One term.

Under Uganda's Competency-Based Curriculum, students are expected to research, apply knowledge, solve problems, and demonstrate what they understand — not simply reproduce notes. But teachers are doing this across large classes with limited time, textbooks, and learning resources.

When learning support does not scale, students who need more explanation or practice are often left to search, copy, or revise alone. SIMU is designed to give each student a starting point for guided learning.

The SIMU approach

A learning assistant grounded in the curriculum, with sources students can follow

SIMU helps students move from a question to understanding. It retrieves relevant learning material, explains difficult concepts in simpler language, and can generate practice questions to help students check what they know.

Curriculum-grounded

SIMU uses curriculum-aligned learning materials to support its answers rather than relying only on general internet knowledge. When a reliable source is unavailable, it should say so rather than guess.

Guided research

Students can explore a question step by step instead of copying the first answer they find online.

Source-backed learning

Where source material is available, SIMU points students back to the underlying learning resource so they can read and learn more.

Accessible by design

SIMU is designed around the devices and connectivity students already have, including WhatsApp and low-bandwidth use cases.

Practice and feedback

Students can practise concepts with follow-up questions designed to help them check whether they actually understand what they have learned.

Learning resources

SIMU is being built to connect students with trusted educational resources, including curriculum materials, textbooks, and teacher-created content.

How it works

From a question to understanding

  1. 1

    A student asks a question

On WhatsApp or the web app, a student asks about a topic in their own words.

  2. 2

    SIMU finds relevant material

SIMU retrieves relevant information from available curriculum-aligned learning materials.

  3. 3

    SIMU explains the concept

The material is turned into a clearer explanation that helps the student understand the idea, not simply copy an answer.

  4. 4

    The student practises

Follow-up questions and exercises help the student check their understanding and identify areas that need more work.

Who it is for

Built for the whole classroom, not just the top of it.

Secondary schools

Extend learning support to students beyond the teacher’s available classroom time, while keeping the teacher at the centre of learning.

Teachers

Give students an additional place to ask questions, research topics, and practise outside direct classroom instruction.

Students

Ask questions in your own words, revisit difficult concepts, and practise as many times as you need.

Parents

Give your child structured learning support at home instead of leaving them to navigate the internet alone.
